The Amazing Amazon Parrots

 

There are quite a few Amazon species some of the more well-known parrots are listed below:

  • The Orange Winged Amazon

 The Orange Winged Amazon is often mistaken for the Blue-fronted Amazon they both have typically green bodies and blue and yellow feathers of their head. They range from 13 to 14 inches in length while the Blue fronted maybe a bit bigger.

Even though his name would suggest that his wings are orange more so than any other color this is not the case. He does have orange in his tail and wings which are more visible during flight rather than sitting.

Orange Winged Amazon is a not quiet bird but is not conceived as a talker either though some individual parrots will learn a few words they are more likely to mimic sounds and whistles. The Orange Winged is a very social bird and loves the interaction with their owners.

The Double-yellow Head Amazon

Amongst the many Amazon parrots the double-yellow headed seems to be a favorite. Also known as the Yellow-headed Parrot, in all probability due to their coloring the difference between them from the others in the Yellow-headed Amazons is they have both the yellow nape and yellow crown, for this reason it is known as the double-yellow head. They make a great companion; these birds seem very talented when it comes to their vocal abilities to accumulate a very large vocabulary. If you are a lover of opera music it has been said he picks that up rather quickly.

The Double-yellow Head ranges from 14 to 16 inch in length, has a large amount of yellow over the head, extending to the back and neck and yellow feathers on the legs. The rest of the body is deep green and their shoulders are red. You really won’t see their full coloring until they have maturated which is between 3 and 5 years old.


Being a very active bird they need plenty of space in their cages which should be very strong a good choice would be a stainless steel cage. Toys are a must they love to chew and shred so they should have plenty of destructible and non-destructible toys . This will help them overcome boredom so they don’t start any behavior problem such as screaming or feather plucking. These parrots seems not to be too picky when it comes to food, however it is still important to feed them a proper diet.

Is well-liked because of his amazing ability to learn how to talk rather quickly both in amount and clearness of speech and makes a wonderful pet. The Yellow-naped looks like a chubby green bird with bright yellow patch on the back of his neck. On the underside of his short tail you can see reddish and dark green feather in the middle.

Yellow-napes are famous for being temperamental and can become quite aggressive at times. With some extra training you can teach them not to bite. This parrot as well as most other has the potential of living very long lives. So you might have to plan accordingly if something should happen to you.

The Lilac-crowned Amazon

When they have been well socialized correctly they can be a very devoted companion. They have green feathers on their body, a maroon forehead, violet-blue crown and their beak is bone colored. Their coloring resembles the Red-crowned Amazon although the Lilac-crowned Amazon does not stand out as much. They are very good at whistling and can obtain a very large vocabulary.

They are not a shy bird by any means they will make a lot of noise and they also will defend their territory when threaten. The Lilac can get cantankerous and sometimes nasty when coming into maturity but those habits should not last long. Considering their mood swings it would be better to be an experience bird keeper. Teaching and training the bird to step onto a stick will definitely be to your advantage.

Amazons can be demanding and unpredictable birds, though some are quite docile. The owner has to learn Amazon body language to be able to predict behavior. They need plenty attention and handling. The Lilac-crowned Amazon would not be a good companion for a child.

Their housing should be roomy where they can get plenty of exercise without that they have the tendency to become obese. Some owners have found that the cage-top playpen  is helpful and also a cage cover was helpful in keeping the bird quite longer in the morning until they were ready to get up.

Like most Amazons Lilac-crowned needs a lot of mental stimulation to keep from becoming bored and from having behavior problems. So that means lots of sturdy toys and perches, foot toys…the more the better. This Lilac-crowned can live more than 50 years if cared for properly which means a proper diet for parrots, including lots of fruit and vegetables, and lots of playtime and exercise to help keep them in good shape.
