Finding A Parrot Breeder and What You Need to Know

Breeders may range from small hobby breeders caring for just a pair or two to large breeding farms that may house hundreds of pairs. They play very important role in the lives of the parrots that they raise.  Of course as with other pet breeders, there are good and bad ones.

Parrot Breeder (“Psittaculturist”) is a person whom specializes in keeping and breeding and conserving parrot species, also on preserving parrots habitat, and public awareness campaigns of the threats to the ongoing existence of parrots worldwide.

You will find four levels of Breeders:

1. The specialist pet owner whom keep only parrots as pets; some will have dozens of pet parrots.

2. The specialist backyard hobbyist who keeps a modest collection of only parrots and breeds them on a very small scale.

3. The specialist hobby farm breeder whose collection has grown so large that they need to shift out to rural farms but still as considered a hobbyist.

4. The specialist professional parrot farmer whom derives his/her main income from the breeding & selling only parrots. (such as selling only African Grey parrots)

The best source for acquiring a young parrot is from a good breeder or good specialty bird store that takes the time necessary to ensure their chicks are healthy, well socialized with people and raised properly.

When your parrot is young its personality can defiantly be affected by the way he or she was raised and handled by the breeder. You want to make sure you find a parrot breeder that has a good status of being a professional and is knowledgeable about parrot care. When purchasing a parrot from rescue groups or pet stores you might not be able to get all the information on the parrots up-bringing that might be vital to the parrots’ health that would help you make the right decision.

When you purchase a parrot from Rescue groups they are re-homed by their owners or offered for adoption from a parrot shelter and often make excellent pets after they adjust to a new home. Some of these, however, may have been neglected or abused in the past, and may do best with an experienced parrot owner.

When purchasing your parrot from a highly regarded breeder you will be able to find out the parrots history and how he or she has been raised. Breeders that take advantage of training parrots when they are young usually have well behave birds that are ready to be placed with their new owner.

When chicks are small some breeders may put a special made closed bird band on one of their legs that has identifying lettering stamped into the metal. A closed ring would not fit over the foot of a grown parrot, so its presence proves the bird was banded as a young chick. However, some owners may have their bird’s band removed after the purchase because of the risk that a band might become caught on a toy or other objects and cause injury. (The removal of a band should be done by a experienced person or veterinarian).

It is imperative that hand-reared chicks are fully weaned from semi-solid hand food to an appropriate diet for parrots. The parrot should be able to crack nuts and seeds for themselves before going to a new home. Breeders should be particular when giving their parrots’ nutritious and safe food so that they will be a well adjusted and healthy bird.

Remember some breeders are just in it to make money by doing your due diligence in finding a dependable parrot breeder will ensure that your parrot has been taught the right socializing skills and has been raised by thoughtful and caring people.

Some breeders will in addition familiarize their young parrots to different experiences, such as harness-training and this is easier to accomplished with young birds so that they can be taken outdoors to enjoy themselves in a relatively safe manner without the risk of flying away. They will also introduce the parrot to being handled by a variety of people including children; this is good for their emotional wellbeing.

Parrots breeders are well educated on how a parrot should be raised to make them an excellent pet. They should also be there to support whenever you have any questions after you acquire one of their parrots. Breeders should allow buyers to view their aviaries so they can see how the parrots have been raised.  Also having a contract for this business transaction is a must sometimes you just don’t know what or when things can happen.

Raising and or buying parrots are a commitment that requires work, time, and effort and of course some expense on your part. If you’re ready to make that kind of promise to a feathered friend, then you’re ready to choose your ultimate parrot.
