How to Care for Your Bird, Not Just Any Bird

We all know that birds have wings and are describe by having feathers, a beak with no teeth, they can lay eggs, and most can fly. Flight is one the natural ways that a bird can take care of itself. Birds fly while feeding to get hold of prey, some birds fly to display themselves during the breeding season. Birds also fly to safe places for nesting and to avoid predators.

Mother Nature has given birds the know how to take care of themselves. The bird care that I am talking about is for the parrots that are in captivity, which was once wild and are among the most intelligent animal species that are now sought after as popular pets.

Basic bird care for parrots begins with having the proper size cage. Regardless of whether you’re expecting to adopt a smaller bird or a larger of the parrot species, my suggestion is to buy the largest, practical cage that fits your need. The bigger the cage your parrot has, the more freedom he will experience and the more comfortable he will be. The beautiful Villa Cage above is pertect for a large bird.

Bird care for parrots also requires trimming your bird’s wings, which is something that should always be done by a professional. You should not assume that you can figure out how to do it on your own, because if you don’t do it correctly, you can damage your bird forever. Many parrot owners trim their birds wing to prevent escape or injury and to limit their flight.

Birds in fact seem to take a certain amount of care in keeping themselves clean. They preen their feathers every day, keeping them shiny and clean. The most help they need from you is a quick trim of their claws. Human nail clippers can crush the sensitive quick or leave sharp or jagged points on our pets’ nails. This bird claw clipper is specially designed for a pet’s round nail, to quickly and easily clip nails and leave them smooth and intact.A parrot really desire is a quick shower of plain water once a week or so, light misting from a spray bottle works really well. Birds who prefer a mist to a faucet or tub will LOVE the Misty Mate Bird Bather! The misting machine mimics the fog and mist from a waterfall in a tropical jungle that a bird would bathe in, making your birds’ bath time more natural and stimulating!

These birds need proper care, which includes the right diet. When raising a parrot bird, care is a lot more involved than giving them water and seeds in their cage. Poor nutrition is the most harmful cause of illness in most parrots. Getting the right nourishment is very important. Most parrots’ diets consist of vitamin enrich parrot seed mix, nuts, fruit, buds and other plant material, and a few species also eat insects and small animals their diets may vary with each species and the activity level of the parrot.

Keep in mind you’ll have to buy some items that can help him exercise and feel more at home and in the process keep him healthy as well. These include play gyms this is a great Play Center for large parrots! Offers a wide variety of things to do, and places to explore! Sturdy construction with roll-around casters so you can bring the fun from room-to-room! Features pull-out catch tray, 2 ceramic crocks, perches, ladders and 2 swing and/or toy hooks!

T-stands are also good to have,  this wrought iron T-stand is designed with play and easy cleanup in mind. You want to purchase accessories that he can chew on.  Some of the textures which your bird welcomes include vegetable-tanned leather, wood, cardboard, paper,(I would recommend not using newspapers because of the ink) rope and even cloth.

Rotate the toys he plays with, this keeps him from getting bored. If you discover that he’s lost interest in a certain item take it out of his cage. Replace it with another and after a few weeks introduce it again. He will think it’s a brand new toy! Driving to the store every month and sorting through the 100+ toys available at that particular store, and finding the right-sized toy for YOUR breed of bird can be a hassle. Chet Womach, Author of Bird Training And Taming Tricks has a program called “Parrot Toys By Mail Club” where they custom-pack the order especially for YOUR breed and size of bird plus he offers a lot of other things you can take a look and see what you think “Parrot Toys By Mail Club”.

Chet Womach can tell you all the dangers that are in those innocent-looking bird toys you might be purchasing from your local pet stores, you can get three new toys sent to you every month that are all 100% Safe, Natural, and Organic! Finding ONE safe, toxin-free toy for your bird can be challenging, and the fact is, you need a minimum of three new toys for your bird every month. Not only because many birds play rough with their toys and destroy them because your parrot gets bored easily. Remember when a parrot gets bored, serious behavior problems can develop like biting, screaming, and feather plucking.

A parrot, believe it or not, probably needs more hours of sleep every night than you. In fact, for some of us, five or six hours of sleep all we need. And a full night’s sleep for us is considered eight hours. For a parrot, though, a full night of rested sleep is a minimum of 10 hours and ideally 12.  And this is a requirement.  That’s because the natural habitat of these birds is 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. If a parrot doesn’t get the sleep he needs, he can develop any number of problems and can even become aggressive.

With some basic parrot care training, just about any unwanted behaviors can be addressed or better yet avoided. Given the longevity of parrots especially the larger ones, raising a parrot is making that lifelong commitment.
